Remarkable Wrexhams…

Phil Parkinson lauded the determination of his Wrexham team as they secured a narrow 1-0 victory against Charlton, maintaining their impressive away performance in the Championship.

The Red Dragons have amassed 16 out of a possible 18 points on the road, bolstering their aspirations for a fourth consecutive promotion.

Oliver Rathbone, who recently signed an extension until the summer of 2028, netted the decisive goal in the 30th minute.

However, Wrexham, now sitting sixth in the league, faced intense pressure from the home side, with goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo making crucial saves to deny Sonny Carey a late equalizer.

Parkinson is now preparing to take on Chelsea in the fifth round of the FA Cup next Saturday. He commented, “We displayed incredible resilience to earn this win.”

“Key moments influenced the game, including outstanding blocks by [Issa] Kabore and [George] Dobson, and a superb finish by Ollie. Arthur’s save from their first shot on target was phenomenal. Carey is a dangerous player in those situations, hitting it low and hard, but Arthur produced a match-winning save,” Parkinson added.

“Our defensive work in the box was exceptional. We anticipated that first contacts from set-pieces and open play would be crucial. The number of times the ball came into our box, only to be cleared by a Wrexham head or a quick reaction to the second ball, was impressive.”

“Broady [Nathan Broadhead] did well to evade his marker before Rathbone did what he does best—he’s consistently calm in those situations and produced a great finish.”

“We had several clear chances in the second half; not converting them put us under pressure, but we managed to hold on. Bringing on players with the presence of Dan Scarr and Zak Vyner bolstered the team’s performance.”

For Charlton, it was a frustrating afternoon as Luke Berry and Harry Clarke squandered first-half opportunities, both failing to test the goalkeeper.

The Addicks have now gone 12 home matches without scoring more than once, a lack of offensive success that hampers their efforts to escape the relegation zone.

Charlton’s manager, Nathan Jones, expressed his disappointment: “The performance level was outstanding, but I’m puzzled as to how we didn’t score three or four times.”

“It was a dominant display—we moved the ball excellently and limited Wrexham to just counter-attacks. Good teams find ways to win, and they are clinical in front of goal.”

“The chances we had were clear-cut, especially Bezza’s—he’s the kind of player expected to convert that. Harry Clarke had a fantastic opportunity as well, and their keeper made an incredible save at the end. The stats say we had only 12 shots, which is hard to believe.”

“We scored more from three shots midweek. If we had been just a fraction more clinical, we would have won today. That’s what’s frustrating. You could argue they defended well, but the reality is we missed our chances.”

“I wish I could be in here singing praises for a fantastic performance, but instead, I’m frustrated because we lost.”
