Noahkai Banks, a promising talent from the U.S. youth national team, has revealed that he is still weighing his international future, pondering a choice between the United States and Germany. This decision comes as he’s been identified as a strong candidate for Mauricio Pochettino’s World Cup squad this summer.
The 19-year-old defender, born in Honolulu to an American father and a Spanish-German mother, has developed through the youth ranks of FC Augsburg and has become a key figure in the Bundesliga team this season.

After showcasing his skills at various youth levels for the U.S., Banks earned his first senior national team call-up in September, following some standout performances with Augsburg. However, he has yet to make an appearance for the senior squad but remains in communication with representatives from both countries. Banks emphasizes that he won’t rush his decision, even with the World Cup approaching in just over three months.
“While playing in a World Cup is a dream, I don’t want my choice to be solely based on that,” he told Sky Sport Germany. “I feel a connection to both nations.”
Recently, Banks made headlines by providing a brilliant assist during Augsburg’s 2-0 victory over FC Cologne, contributing to the team’s ongoing eight-match unbeaten streak.
“Everything is really enjoyable right now, and it’s hard to pinpoint exactly why we’re performing so well,” Banks remarked. “We have a fantastic team dynamic.”
“We have fun in the locker room, and once we hit the field, we are completely focused. This equilibrium is what makes everything come together.
Pochettino has referred to Banks as a “massive talent,” and the player expressed his contentment with his debut experience in the U.S. men’s national team setup. “I truly appreciated the camp,” he shared with ESPN. “As a young player, I thought I might be treated differently, but the support from the senior players like Christian Pulisic and Tim Weah was incredible, and it helped me integrate smoothly.”
