Barcelona has seen its squad spending limit increase by nearly €100 million ($116m), rising to €433 million ($501m), as announced by LaLiga on Tuesday. This increase enhances the Spanish champions’ potential to invest in new players this summer.
Real Madrid retains the highest spending limit in the league at €761 million ($880m), followed by Atlético Madrid in third place, with a limit of €336 million ($389m).
Villarreal (€173m, $200m) and Athletic Club (€132m, $153m) round out the top five, while Levante (€17m, $19.6m), Sevilla (€22m, $25m), and Getafe (€34m, $39m) are operating under the lowest caps in the league.
Each club’s spending limit, made public after every transfer window, indicates the maximum amount that can be spent on first-team players, coaching staff, and youth and reserve teams.
Barcelona’s updated limit signifies an increase of €82 million ($95m) from the earlier €351 million ($406m) cap at the season’s outset, sparking new hopes for player acquisitions.
Despite this improvement, the Catalan club remains above its limit, with sources confirming their squad expenditures are still over €500 million ($579m) annually; however, they are moving closer to achieving financial balance.
Until that balance is reached, league regulations require them to invest only a fraction of what they earn or save on new players.
Currently, Barça is amidst an electoral period and lacks a permanent president, but all three final candidates assert that the club will be in a position to make signings by the summer.
Joan Laporta, aiming for reelection, has indicated that the team’s return to Spotify Camp Nou will enhance spending capabilities, while Víctor Font has mentioned he is exploring “three or four” potential signings.
Marc Ciria has also expressed to ESPN that if he is elected, Barça will be positioned to compete effectively in the transfer market.
“Under our financial plan, I anticipate that the situation will be fully normalized, allowing us to operate on equal footing with any other club,” he stated. “Barcelona will have the capacity to make substantial signings and aim for success in the next five Champions League tournaments — a competition we haven’t conquered in 11 years.”
ESPN has previously reported that Barça is eager to strengthen in several positions, targeting a striker, center-back, left winger, and additional depth at full back, as highlighted by club sources.
