WOLVERHAMPTON, England — Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed frustration following his team’s 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Tuesday, deeming it a “same old story” as they once again conceded a late goal in a Premier League match.
The decisive strike came from Wolves midfielder Andre, whose deflected shot found the net in the 94th minute at Molineux Stadium. This defeat marks Liverpool’s fifth loss this season due to goals conceded after the 90th minute, setting a new record in the competition’s history.
“How do I sum this up?” Slot remarked regarding his team’s ninth defeat in the Premier League this season. “It’s the same story. While we’ve managed to gather points lately, largely from set-pieces, we continue to struggle to convert open play opportunities.”
“We had significantly more possession and created more chances in open play than the opposition but only managed to score once. Yet again, the end result is that they scored two, including one in injury time, summarizing our season perfectly.”
“We’ve had greater ball control and generated more chances, but our open play scoring remains an issue. We had several set-piece opportunities, but our execution in the first half was lacking.”
“Our first half performance was below par—though we improved in the second half, it still wasn’t up to standard. We had multiple opportunities to go ahead late in the game, with Mo [Salah] close to creating a chance, and Virgil [van Dijk] nearly scored with a header. The goal we conceded wasn’t even a clear-cut chance.”
“This has been a recurring theme for us this season. If the timing of the goal in injury time is a coincidence, it seems less so given how frequently it has occurred. We allowed very few chances but still ended up conceding two goals.”
Following this defeat, Liverpool remains in fifth place, although they could drop to sixth if Chelsea beats Aston Villa on Wednesday.
On whether this loss affects their Champions League ambitions, Slot admitted: “It’s a setback, and this result certainly didn’t help us. However, we still have nine games left to play as we approach the season’s conclusion.”
“Losing points in a match that was completely within our grasp is frustrating. I’m not saying we played exceptionally well, but in ten attempts with this style, we wouldn’t lose every time.”
“While we might not win every time, we need to perform better and not depend on luck. We had enough chances to secure the win today.”
“But let’s also give credit to Wolves. They fought hard from the first minute to the last and, based on their efforts throughout the game, perhaps deserved a bit of luck.”
