Van Dijk: Slot Every…

Virgil van Dijk acknowledged that head coach Arne Slot has “every right” to be upset with the Liverpool players after their unexpected 2-1 defeat to relegation contenders Wolves on Tuesday night.

This loss marked a historic moment, as Liverpool became the first team in Premier League history to concede five stoppage-time goals in a single season, with Wolves midfielder André scoring the decisive goal in the 94th minute at Molineux Stadium.

The goal capped off a disappointing performance from Slot’s team, who initially fell behind to a strike from Rodrigo Gomes, although Mohamed Salah later equalised for Liverpool in the 83rd minute.

“Yes, he was angry,” Van Dijk commented on Slot’s reaction following the match.

“Of course, he was justified in his frustration because we didn’t perform well. That was clear in the first half. Although we showed more urgency in the second half, it was still insufficient.

“He was absolutely right to be frustrated. It’s essential for us to shift our focus fully on [Wolves in the FA Cup] this Friday. That’s our duty physically and mentally.

“Prior to their first goal, our performance warranted going behind. We were quite poor, too slow and predictable in our ball movement.”

Tuesday’s defeat significantly undermines Liverpool’s pursuit of Champions League qualification, as Liverpool currently occupies fifth place, having played one more game than sixth-placed Chelsea.

“Whether we earn [Champions League qualification] or not, it must be deserved,” Van Dijk stated.

“Before facing Wolves, four consecutive wins were commendable. We achieved good results in challenging matches. Given our current season, I don’t believe there was much optimism.

“However, we managed to secure wins, defend well, and score from set-pieces. Tonight’s loss rests solely on us. It’s very disappointing.

“It’s up to us to learn from this setback and adapt, but it’s painful for us and for our supporters. We need to persevere.

“We return here on Friday, eager to progress far in the FA Cup. So, we must deliver a markedly improved performance on the pitch.”
