Phil Parkinson aims to leverage both Wrexham‘s illustrious FA Cup history and his own experiences when they square off against Chelsea in the fifth round on Saturday.
When discussing the FA Cup in this part of Wales, it’s hard to overlook Wrexham’s stunning 2-1 victory over Arsenal in 1992, where Fourth Division Wrexham pulled off an incredible comeback thanks to late goals from Mickey Thomas and Steve Watkin.
This season, they have already claimed the scalp of a Premier League side, defeating Nottingham Forest in a thrilling penalty shootout (4-3) after a gripping 3-3 draw at home in the third round.

Parkinson reminisces about his own notable encounter with Chelsea, recalling how his Bradford side rallied from 2-0 down to clinch a 4-2 victory at Stamford Bridge during a fourth-round tie in 2015.
“I’ve been reflecting on that match this week as we prepare,” Parkinson mentioned. “The lead-up and the tactics we employed were key.
“Despite being two goals down, we played well and maintained our belief, sticking to our game plan and scoring just before half-time. The second half was unforgettable!
“We reminded our players that anything is possible on Saturday. It’s vital to approach every match with confidence; otherwise, why even show up?”
“We need to go in with confidence, but also with an understanding of the underdog mindset and the specific goals we need to meet to give Chelsea a tough match.”
This victory over Chelsea came two years after Parkinson led League Two Bradford to the League Cup final, highlighting his impressive track record in cup competitions.
At Wrexham, he orchestrated a thrilling 4-3 triumph over Championship side Coventry while they were still in the National League during the 2022-23 season, and took Premier League-bound Sheffield United to a replay before exiting.
With three consecutive promotions under their belt, Wrexham is currently one of the informed teams in the Championship, positioned in the playoff spots and riding a three-match winning streak, indicating their cup run isn’t just a distraction.
“After beating Ipswich [in the fourth round], we reminded the players to focus on our league performance and not get too distracted by the Chelsea match,” he stated. “We are entering this weekend with a mindset of ‘everything to gain, nothing to lose,’ and we’re also in a strong league position.”
The team’s recent form has fans hopeful for a fourth promotion and a shot at Premier League football next season, making Saturday’s matchup a crucial test of their readiness for the next level.
“Throughout our journey in various divisions, we’ve faced cup challenges, like those against Coventry and Sheffield United, and we’ve discussed with the players the importance of facing superior quality opponents, both tactically and physically,” he explained. “This match against a team like Chelsea is the next step for us, and it’s imperative we deliver our best performance to gauge where we stand, both individually and collectively, against such esteemed competition.”
