Milan Secures Derby Double…

AC Milan narrowed the gap between them and Inter Milan at the top of Serie A to seven points with a 1-0 win in the derby held at San Siro.

Pervis Estupiñán scored the only goal of the match in the first half, marking the first time since 2011 that Milan secured a league double over their bitter rivals.

The victory extended Inter’s winless streak in the Derby della Madonnina to seven games, while Massimiliano Allegri celebrated his fifth win in ten derby matches as coach of the Rossoneri across two terms.

Milan nearly scored earlier when Luka Modric seized on a blunder by Inter goalkeeper Yann Sommer, only to shoot just wide.

Inter had previously gone unbeaten in 15 league matches since their 1-0 defeat to Milan in November, scoring in every Serie A game during that time. However, their recent performances have been less impressive.

The squad, managed by Cristian Chivu, faced an upset against Norwegian team Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League playoff round and could only muster a goalless draw in the first leg of their Coppa Italia semifinal against promoted Como last week.

On Sunday, they had a chance to take the lead when Henrikh Mkhitaryan made a dynamic run, only to have his weak finish saved by Mike Maignan. Instead, Milan struck first just a minute later with a well-placed pass from Youssouf Fofana.

Estupiñán, surging forward, held off Luis Henrique before powerfully firing a left-footed shot into the upper corner, beating Sommer.

Milan almost extended their lead before halftime when Christian Pulisic delivered a low cross, but Alexis Saelemaekers couldn’t convert under the pressure from Federico Dimarco.

In the second half, a surge from Pulisic created a chance for Rafael Leão, but his shot went wide. Fofana also had a chance, but Sommer managed to parry it away.

Inter posed a threat with a header from Ange-Yoan Bonny that went over the bar. In stoppage time, Pio Esposito had a chance in the area, but his volley went wide as Milan held on to remain within striking distance of the league leaders.
