When discussing key players on the U.S. men’s national team, few are more vital than Sergiño Dest, who plays as a defender for PSV Eindhoven.
Moreover, Christian Pulisic of AC Milan is an automatic choice due to his critical role in the U.S. offense, while Tyler Adams from AFC Bournemouth is essential for the team’s defense. Weston McKennie also ranks among these crucial players, regardless of his position.
However, Dest stands out as the ultimate attacking wildcard for the USMNT. His recent hamstring injury during PSV’s 2-1 victory over AZ Alkmaar serves as a significant concern. In the 55th minute, he collapsed in pain, holding his left leg, and required assistance from the training staff to exit the field, placing only minimal weight on his injured leg.
There is still hope that Dest could recover in time for the World Cup. On his Instagram, he posted a positive message, stating that this setback isn’t the end of the season and that he would do everything possible to ensure a timely return. Nevertheless, hamstring injuries are notoriously tough to recover from, and he may not be fit to participate in the U.S.’s World Cup opener against Paraguay on June 11.
If Dest is unable to return, his absence would be a significant blow, considering his ability to make unexpected plays. His knack for evading defenders, coupled with his capacity to take shots on goal, creates an unpredictable dynamic, even as a defender. His contributions in attacking situations are critical to the U.S. lineup, whether he plays as a starter or comes off the bench. Without him, the team may find it easier for opponents to concentrate their defensive efforts on Pulisic.
If Dest is ruled out, U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino has several alternatives. Alex Freeman, currently with Villarreal in La Liga, has significantly progressed this past year, transitioning from a newcomer at Orlando City SC to a frequent USMNT call-up. While Freeman may not have the same attacking flair as Dest, he did make an impact in November, scoring twice in a 5-1 friendly win over Uruguay.
Joe Scally could also fill in if needed. He has primarily played as an outside back at Borussia Mönchengladbach, but has gained experience as a wingback this season and even scored a rare goal against FC Augsburg in January.
While McKennie has played as a wingback for Juventus this season, his utilization in that position for the national team seems unlikely given their current needs.
The most likely beneficiary of Dest’s injury could be Marseille‘s Timothy Weah. Like McKennie, Weah has played multiple roles this season, including as a wingback. With Pochettino often employing a 3-4-2-1 formation, it has been challenging for Weah to find a spot due to stiff competition. However, his speed and World Cup experience could make him an asset in the wingback position, especially with Dest’s absence.
With the upcoming March international window, and Dest likely sidelined, the positional competition is expected to center around Freeman and Weah, with hopes that one of them can provide a semblance of the attacking threat Dest has brought to the team.
