Bayern Star Davies Leaves…

BERGAMO, Italy — Alphonso Davies exited the field with an injury during Bayern Munich‘s Champions League match against Atalanta on Tuesday, leaving uncertainty about the Canadian star’s World Cup status.

Davies’ injury, along with those affecting forward Jamal Musiala and goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, overshadowed Bayern’s emphatic 6-1 victory and posed challenging tactical dilemmas for coach Vincent Kompany.

Post-match, Kompany commented on Davies’ injury, suggesting it might not be severe and expressed confidence in the team’s depth. “It’s unfortunate, but I assured the players I have complete trust in our squad,” he told Prime Video, adding, “we’ll manage some games without him.”

Initially, there were concerns about Bayern’s performance without a fully fit Harry Kane, but those doubts were alleviated as Michael Olise, Nicolas Jackson, and Serge Gnabry dominated the match with Kane remaining an unused substitute.

Now, Kompany must address the potential loss of his primary left back, a key forward, and Bayern’s top two goalkeepers.

Davies collapsed in a squatting position on the pitch after suffering an apparent non-contact injury while playing the ball with Bayern leading 6-0 in the 70th minute. He looked distressed, covering his face and gesturing in frustration.

His teammates gathered around the Canada left-back to shield him from view as medical staff assisted him off the field with his shirt pulled over his face.

As he was approached on the sidelines by substitute Tom Bischof and coach Vincent Kompany, Davies shielded his eyes with his hand.

Davies played a pivotal role for Canada during their return to the World Cup in 2022 and captained the team at the 2024 Copa América, but he has faced injury challenges, returning from an ACL tear he sustained in March 2025 and missing the early part of this season.

Canada will co-host the World Cup in June and July alongside the United States and Mexico and is scheduled to play warm-up matches against Iceland and Tunisia at the end of this month.

Bayern was in command after Musiala netted the sixth goal, with the team at one point appearing capable of breaking records for the largest margins in Champions League knockout matches, especially when Dayot Upamecano hit the post shortly afterward. Bayern now joins an elite group of four teams to score six goals in an away Champions League knockout-stage match.

The match ended with additional concerns for Kompany as Musiala, who had only returned in January after recovering from a broken leg sustained at last year’s Club World Cup, limped off in stoppage time after struggling with an ankle issue.

With all substitutions already utilized, Bayern played the final moments of the match with ten players, allowing Atalanta to score a consolation goal following a counterattack that involved a collision between Urbig, who replaced injured first-choice goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, and Atalanta’s Nikola Krstovic, which left Urbig appearing shaken as he exited the pitch.

The silver lining for Bayern was the indication that Kane might return soon ahead of their Bundesliga match against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Kompany mentioned that Kane was “very close” to playing against Atalanta, stating, “but then it was 5-0 and he was very far away.”
