Slot criticizes wasteful…

Arne Slot expressed his dissatisfaction with the officiating and Liverpool’s lack of efficiency following their Champions League last-16 defeat to Liverpool on Tuesday, losing 1-0 at Galatasaray.

A decisive early header from Mario Lemina, capitalizing on a poorly defended corner, secured the victory for Galatasaray—a repeat of the scoreline from their previous league encounter in September.

While the match could have ended worse for Liverpool as Galatasaray sought to add to their lead, the open play offered the Reds several opportunities to either level the score or take a lead into the upcoming return leg at Anfield next Wednesday.

After marking his 100th game in charge, Coach Slot commented, “We started the game very well, even better than three months ago. We had three or four excellent chances, the key opportunity being when Florian (Wirtz) came close to an open goal but failed to convert.”

“We were unable to capitalize, and much like last time, their first attack resulted in a corner. You have to credit them for playing like every chance is their last. It’s a lesson for us; we sometimes take our chances for granted, assuming more will come.”

Slot further noted, “It’s already a challenging venue, but going 1-0 down makes it even tougher.” Ibrahima Konaté had a goal disallowed by VAR referee Guillermo Cuadra Fernandez for handball during a chaotic moment at a second-half corner, leading Slot to question the numerous decisions that seemed to go against them at Galatasaray.

He anticipated a more typical experience when they play at home, as referee Jesus Gil Manzano’s decisions left him frustrated in Turkey, which he felt were influenced by the atmosphere.

“It’s incredibly challenging to converse with referees in such situations, especially since they are in communication with VAR,” Slot explained. “If the goal disallowed was indeed correct—though opinions vary— I was even more frustrated by the fact that every free-kick and corner we executed ended with Galatasaray being awarded a free kick instead.”

He continued, “If you consider how much they were pulling Virgil’s (van Dijk) shirt before the ball struck Ibou’s arm, it’s fair to say the atmosphere played a significant role today.”

Slot concluded, “In the Premier League, a lot more is allowed compared to the Champions League. That’s why I was astonished there was no penalty, given the swift whistle when we made fouls. It was really surprising that the same referee decided to let another incident go unpunished. Overall, given the 90 minutes, I shouldn’t be surprised by that decision.”
