Wrexham Mourns Missed…

Phil Parkinson expressed disappointment as his Wrexham team fell 2-1 at home to fellow promotion contenders Hull, missing a key opportunity to ascend to fifth place in the Championship.

A victory could have seen Wrexham leapfrog the Tigers, but instead, they faced their first defeat in five league matches. Goals from Joe Gelhardt and Lewis Koumas put Hull ahead in both halves, while a 76th-minute goal from Nathan Broadhead provided a momentary spark of hope for a comeback.

This loss came just three days after Wrexham’s thrilling 4-2 FA Cup defeat to Chelsea in extra time, a match that took a toll on the squad. Top scorer Kieffer Moore was unavailable due to a hamstring injury sustained during that game, while George Dobson was absent due to a suspension following his red card against Chelsea.

“I sensed that with Kieffer injured, Dobbo suspended, and perhaps a bit of self-pity, it affected our performance,” Parkinson remarked.

“We’ve always prided ourselves on resilience. There have been many occasions when people doubted our capability to bounce back from setbacks.

“However, we need to rise above these challenges and put up a strong fight against Swansea on Friday.”

Parkinson stated it was too early to provide a specific timeline for Moore’s recovery but mentioned that the 33-year-old is in doubt for Wales’ World Cup qualifying playoff against Bosnia and Herzegovina on March 26.

“We should have a clearer picture in a week or two, but considering the timing, he’s a significant doubt,” he added.

Hull dominated the match for extended periods, facing little threat until Broadhead’s late goal brought a glimmer of hope for Wrexham.

The victory marked Hull’s eighth win in their last ten away games, putting them six points ahead of Wrexham and nine points clear of seventh-placed Derby as they solidified their playoff position.

This match also allowed the Tigers to seek revenge for their earlier Carabao Cup loss in August, where Wrexham had triumphed on penalties after a dramatic comeback.

Hull manager Sergej Jakirovic praised the win, stating, “It was a crucial three points and a significant victory against a strong opponent. Wrexham have demonstrated their abilities all season, particularly at home. They are always a threat, as shown by our previous encounter in the EFL Cup. I believe we executed our game plan effectively tonight.”
