NWSL Champions Gotham FC…

Reigning NWSL champions Gotham FC announced the acquisition of Norwegian midfielder Guro Reiten on Thursday, just two days before the team’s first match of the 2026 NWSL season.

Reiten will join Gotham on a loan deal until July, coinciding with the expiration of her contract with six-time defending English champions Chelsea. She has already signed a pre-contract with Gotham FC that will extend through the 2029 NWSL season.

“Guro is an exceptional talent who has consistently excelled at the top levels of the game,” said Gotham FC General Manager Yael Averbuch West in a statement. “Her experience in high-stakes competitions with Chelsea and her contributions to the Norwegian national team will provide our squad with vital leadership and attacking creativity. We are thrilled to welcome her to Gotham.”

This sudden transfer occurs while Chelsea is in third place in England’s Women’s Super League, trailing Manchester City by nine points. Reiten, known for her creative attacking abilities, has seen reduced playing time this season.

In an emotional video shared on Chelsea’s social media platforms, Reiten said goodbye to the club.

“Everything has to come to an end, and this is my farewell here at Chelsea. I vividly remember Emma [Hayes] reaching out to me six-and-a-half years ago, convincing me to join the club, and how scared I was,” she reflected. “I was afraid I wasn’t up to par, afraid of leaving my family behind, but I didn’t realize I was about to gain a new family.”

“It’s been a genuine honor and privilege to represent this club.”

Reiten is recognized as a talented and creative player, having made the team of the year in England twice and being featured in ESPN FC’s 50 best women’s players of 2024.

She has achieved 21 goals in 108 appearances for Norway and has participated in the last two World Cups.

“I’m excited to join Gotham FC and grateful for the opportunity to be part of this club,” Reiten stated. “Gotham has built something extraordinary over the past few years, and there’s unmistakable ambition here.”

“I can’t wait to work hard, learn, and do everything possible to help the team achieve success.”

During her time at Chelsea, Reiten scored 59 goals and provided 44 assists in 207 matches across all competitions. She played a significant role in Chelsea securing six league titles, four FA Cups, and three League Cups while performing in various attacking capacities.

Reiten also helped lead Chelsea to the 2021 UEFA Women’s Champions League final, where they were defeated by Barcelona.

Reiten joined Chelsea in 2019 after a successful domestic career.

Gotham starts their NWSL title defense this Saturday against expansion team Boston Legacy FC (12:30 p.m. ET, ABC/Disney+/ESPN App).
