Arteta and Hürzeler…

Mikel Arteta emphasized that he shares a positive relationship with Fabian Hürzeler after the Brighton manager sought to clarify his critical remarks about Arsenal’s playing style.

Following Brighton’s recent 1-0 defeat to the Premier League leaders, Hürzeler expressed that the Gunners are “making their own rules.” In response, both managers acknowledged they’ve exchanged text messages to discuss Hürzeler’s comments regarding Arsenal’s tactics.

“It’s not personal, and I’ve reiterated my respect for him as one of the top managers in the Premier League,” Hürzeler stated during his Friday news conference. “I truly admire many aspects of their play and enjoy watching them perform.”

“I reached out to him and expressed the same sentiments, affirming my respect for everyone at Arsenal. I will be the first to congratulate him if they secure the Premier League title because they thoroughly deserve it.”

“That said, there were aspects that stirred my emotions. I am someone who stands by my principles and my views, even when it causes a stir.”

Arteta did not divulge specifics about their communication but reiterated his support for Arsenal’s approach as they prepare for their upcoming clash with Everton.

“That’s a private discussion,” Arteta remarked. “He’s made his comments public, which speaks volumes about his character.”

“I appreciate that, and I believe he’s doing an excellent job with Brighton.”

Critics have highlighted Arsenal’s heavy reliance on set pieces and questioned the enjoyment factor of their playstyle.

Arteta offered no apologies for their approach, asserting: “That’s the nature of the rules. If we want to avoid long throws, we have to make adjustments. The real challenge lies in man-to-man marking. If all managers agree that this tactic isn’t viable, the league will experience a significant transformation.”

Arsenal currently holds a seven-point lead over second-placed Manchester City, who have a game in progress.

When asked about the importance of style in their title chase, Arteta responded: “It’s about playing the best football possible. The game demands you perform at the highest level to secure victory.”

Heading into the match against Everton, Arteta reported no new injury issues, though there’s uncertainty about the fitness of Martin Odegaard and Leandro Trossard.

While he refrained from explicitly expressing a desire for relegation-threatened Tottenham to survive in order to uphold the intense north London rivalry next season, Arteta acknowledged the allure of the derby.

“I always say it’s one of the most enthralling matches we have. The passion and rivalry elevate the sport, and the emotions that follow a victory are unparalleled.”

“It’s not my place to predict outcomes, but I can certainly describe the intensity of playing against them.”
