Joan Laporta has been re-elected as the president of Barcelona for another five years, having successfully defeated Victor Font in the election held on Sunday.
Laporta secured a decisive win, amassing 24,643 votes with 36,117 of the 48,400 total votes counted, assuring him an unassailable lead.
The election saw a voter turnout of 42.34%, according to Barça, with 114,504 members eligible to participate.
Current and former club presidents, coaches, and players were among those who cast their votes at Spotify Camp Nou, including Hansi Flick and various members of the men’s first team.
Coincidentally, the election day coincided with Barça’s 5-2 victory over Sevilla in LaLiga, allowing Flick and several players—Raphinha, Pedri, and Dani Olmo—to submit their votes after celebrating the win.
“I won’t disclose who I’m voting for because it’s a secret,” Flick stated during a press conference shortly before voting. “It’s a special day. I saw the election on TV in my office at the stadium; it’s indeed special. I think everyone is happy; it was a great day.”
Earlier, goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, currently on loan at Girona, faced an awkward moment when he discovered he could not vote because his name was missing from the electoral register.
While all Barça players automatically become club members upon joining, it’s their responsibility to keep their membership details updated—a task the German international had neglected prior to the election.
Injured Barça Femení players Aitana Bonmatí and Laia Aleixandri managed to cast their votes, although most of their teammates were unavailable as they were competing away against Deportivo de La Coruña that Sunday.
Former Barça coach Xavi Hernández also participated in the voting—just days after labeling Laporta a “liar” over the latter’s handling of Lionel Messi’s failed return to the club in 2023—along with ex-Inter Miami CF midfielder Sergio Busquets. Voting took place across five polling stations, including locations in Tarragona, Girona, Lleida, and Andorra.
This result mirrors that of 2021, when Laporta also handily defeated Font, succeeding Josep Maria Bartomeu as president.
Laporta’s re-election marks the continuation of his second term in office; he previously served from 2003 to 2010, during which he hired Pep Guardiola and witnessed the club’s first Treble in 2009, before returning to the position eleven years later.
Since his return, Barça has secured two LaLiga titles, while the women’s team has celebrated three Champions League victories. However, it’s the men’s team’s triumphs under Flick that have been pivotal to Laporta’s campaign.
Last season, Flick led Barça to a domestic treble, winning LaLiga, the Copa del Rey, and the Spanish Supercopa, as well as reaching the Champions League semifinal for the first time since 2019. The team is once again in strong contention in both LaLiga and the Champions League this season.
Meanwhile, Laporta is overseeing the redevelopment of Spotify Camp Nou, with the first two tiers of the updated stadium recently becoming operational for the match against Sevilla, increasing its capacity to over 60,000 as work on the third tier continues.
Font aimed to persuade members to vote for him by arguing that the club’s financial situation has not improved during Laporta’s tenure—contrary to Laporta’s claims—and citing delays in returning to Spotify Camp Nou, along with Laporta’s management of Messi’s departure.
