Dominik Szoboszlai expressed that Liverpool “should be satisfied with the Conference League” if their lackluster performance persists, and mentioned that he felt “flat” following the team’s conceded equalizer in their 1-1 match against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Hungarian international had given Liverpool an early advantage at Anfield with an impressive free kick, but Richarlison equalized in the 90th minute, leading to yet another disappointing outcome for Arne Slot’s team, who missed the opportunity to move into fourth place in the Premier League standings.
“That is a massive disappointment,” Szoboszlai told Sky Sports. “I don’t know what occurred; I have no words. In the last minute, once again, I can’t count how many times this season. We must wake up.”
“I feel down. We must wake up because at this rate, we should consider ourselves lucky to be in the Conference League. I truly don’t understand why this is happening. I think we played well in the first half, controlling the game well with few chances conceded, apart from one or two headers.”
“In the second half, we just didn’t maintain that level of play. We’ll have a discussion among ourselves; it’s a challenging period, but we need to pull together.”
The final whistle was met with boos from the Liverpool supporters, many players appearing stunned as they exited the field.
“I didn’t hear the boos, but we can understand why they are frustrated,” Szoboszlai stated. “Our performances haven’t met expectations. They should support us, especially considering last season when we were champions with a few games left. We need their backing during this tough time.”
“There is still ample opportunity to demonstrate our commitment. We need to unite and fight for the club.”
The result leaves Liverpool in fifth place, likely still qualifying for the Champions League, just two points behind Aston Villa and one point ahead of Chelsea.
Slot’s squad will aim to regroup ahead of their Champions League second leg against Galatasaray on Wednesday, currently trailing the Turkish team 1-0 on aggregate after the first match.
“I think it’s reasonable for fans to feel frustrated because they have often witnessed the home team fail to secure expected points due to last-minute goals conceded,” Slot commented in his post-match press conference. “Now, it’s up to us to channel that frustration into our performance against Galatasaray on Wednesday and deliver an impressive showing.”
