Donnarumma Critiques…

Gianluigi Donnarumma has expressed his confusion over Vinícius Júnior‘s decision to celebrate in front of Manchester City supporters, suggesting that a player of his caliber “should be appreciated by everyone.”

The Brazilian forward scored twice as Real Madrid triumphed 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, completing a 5-1 aggregate victory to advance to the Champions League quarter-finals.

His opening penalty was celebrated with a mock-crying gesture—referencing a banner displayed by City fans during Real Madrid’s visit in February that read, ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out.’

This was reportedly a jab at Vinícius’ feelings of disappointment after losing out to Rodri for the 2024 Ballon d’Or.

However, it was his celebration for the second goal in stoppage time that seemed to vex Donnarumma, as the City goalkeeper approached Vinícius while he was in front of home fans, pointing to the name on his shirt.

Regarding the incident, Donnarumma stated, “He’s a champion and should be loved by everyone. I told him that. He played two fantastic games, but I believe someone of his caliber should earn everyone’s affection—he should strive to be loved for being a champion.”

City had to navigate most of the encounter with 10 men after their captain, Bernardo Silva, received a red card for handling a shot from Vinícius.

Erling Haaland scored for City, who managed 22 shots, but a comeback was beyond reach.

The team must now regroup ahead of Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Arsenal.

Donnarumma, for his part, is focusing on the upcoming World Cup qualification playoffs with Italy.

He commented, “I think the red card was crucial, but football is unpredictable, especially in the Champions League. I’m proud of my teammates; we played exceedingly well, and with 11 against 11, the outcome would have likely been different. The disappointment is significant, but we must bounce back as we now have the Carabao Cup to contend for on Sunday. Additionally, we need to work towards bringing Italy back to the World Cup.”
