The captain of Aston Villa, John McGinn, praised the remarkable performance of goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez, who played a crucial role in propelling the team to the Europa League quarterfinals.
The Argentinian keeper, whose future at Villa remains uncertain, was instrumental in McGinn’s second-half goal against Lille, occurring just 15 seconds after he made a key save by accurately launching Jadon Sancho into a promising position.

With a late second goal from Leon Bailey, Villa secured a 2-0 victory for the night and a 3-0 aggregate win, which sets the stage for their quarterfinal clash against Bologna.
However, the spotlight was firmly on Martínez after the goal, as he provocatively gestured towards the Lille supporters, who weren’t shy about expressing their disdain for him.
His unpopularity in France stems from his actions during the 2022 World Cup final and a previous confrontation with Lille’s fans in their 2024 Conference League match, where Villa triumphed on penalties, aided by some typical gamesmanship.
McGinn described Martínez as “a mad man,” adding, “I know he’s a family man, but he has a big kid inside him, a lively character and a top goalkeeper. Even at 2-0, he made a fantastic save.”
He further remarked on TNT Sports: “Emi was brilliant, and it highlights Jadon’s performance as his best in a Villa shirt. He was miles ahead as man of the match tonight. The manager had been urging me to get into the box, and he delivered the perfect pass.”
The timing of McGinn’s goal, occurring just nine minutes into a second half where Lille had started strongly, was particularly disheartening for the French squad, including veteran striker Olivier Giroud.
“We were in a strong phase, and conceding that goal was something we could have avoided,” Giroud shared with TNT. “We failed to score, and Martínez’s pass was remarkable. I tried to stay alert, but he delivered an exceptional assist; it’s frustrating.”
This victory keeps Villa’s hopes for silverware alive. Following narrowly missing out in both the Conference League and Champions League over the past two seasons, Unai Emery, known for his prowess in the Europa League, will surely be aiming for a fifth title in Istanbul this May.
Under his guidance, Villa’s journey has been marked by memorable moments, with three consecutive European quarter-finals standing as a testament to his impact.
Emery has also become the fastest Villa manager to record 100 wins, a feat acknowledged by the home crowd with a Tifo display before the match.
While this particular match may not rank among the most unforgettable under Emery, the team did assert their dominance throughout.
Emery expressed satisfaction with the team’s overall performance over the two matches, stating, “I’m pleased with how we played consistently, remaining organized and respectful towards our opponents. While we weren’t spectacular, we maintained a strong defense and seized our chances ruthlessly when needed. This competitive spirit was evident in both matches.”
“Our primary focus is still on the Premier League, as it is our priority. The Europa League poses a challenging competition, but we must enjoy the journey, compete effectively with a diverse squad, and strive to establish a strong team structure.”
