BRIGHTON, England — Arne Slot expressed that Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion “lots” and acknowledged that his team’s performance this season has been lacking.
Danny Welbeck netted two goals at the Amex stadium, securing all three points for Brighton and delivering a significant setback to Liverpool in their quest for Champions League qualification.
“This loss is incredibly disappointing, and we should feel it,” Slot stated. “However, the main issue is that our current standing stems from dropping points against Wolves due to a last-minute deflected shot. The Tottenham goal we conceded late last week is arguably a bigger problem than losing to Brighton away.”
Liverpool was without key players Mohamed Salah and Alisson Becker during their trip to the south coast, and Hugo Ekitike had to leave the match with an injury early in the first half.
When asked if he believes outsiders would sympathize with his team given the £450 million ($602M) spent in last summer’s transfer window, Slot replied: “No, I completely understand that perspective because in England, it’s uncommon for clubs to sell players as well.”
“Typically, if a club spends £450 million as we did, it’s assumed they are enhancing an already strong squad. But our club has a different model that not everyone grasps. Fans and pundits want to ignore the £300 million ($401M) we’ve amassed through player sales.”
“It’s also worth noting that the £150 million ($201M) player has been unavailable, and Giovanni Leoni could not be fielded due to injury. We are now working with a squad below what we’ve sold. Jeremie Frimpong has only recently become more available, and we brought in Mamardashvili as a backup keeper.
“Despite winning the league last season and investing £450 million, expectations are understandably high from pundits, media, and fans alike. We are evaluating our circumstances and challenges this season, and while it makes sense to be a bit more realistic about our situation, the performance is still not up to par no matter how many justifications I offer.”
Regarding updates on Liverpool’s absent players, Slot added: “Alisson will definitely be out during the international break. Hugo could potentially play tomorrow if required; he just suffered a dead leg.”

“Brighton did what we expected when facing a team that had only 62 hours of rest. They intensified the match right from the start. There was nothing wrong with the challenges, but unfortunately, a collision resulted in Hugo’s early departure.
“After just two minutes without Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak, and Hugo, we had to adjust our line-up, playing players out of their usual positions. We managed this well in the first half, but as the match progressed, Brighton gained more strength.
“During the second half, Brighton looked closer to scoring a third than we were to equalizing.”
