The match between Sunderland and Newcastle was halted following allegations of racist abuse directed at Lutsharel Geertruida.
The Premier League Match Centre announced on social media: “Today’s fixture between Newcastle United and Sunderland was temporarily paused during the second half due to reports of discriminatory abuse from the stands, aimed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida. This action is in accordance with the Premier League’s anti-discrimination protocol.
“An investigation into the incident at St James’ Park will be conducted. We extend our full support to both the player and the clubs involved.
