Vini not far off career…

Alvaro Arbeloa remarked that Vinícius Júnior is “not far off” from his career-best form after the forward netted a pair of goals — including a stunning winner — in Real Madrid‘s 3-2 derby victory over Atlético Madrid on Sunday.

Ademola Lookman opened the scoring for Atlético in the first half at the Bernabéu, only for Vinícius to equalize from the penalty spot, followed by Federico Valverde putting Madrid ahead.

Nahuel Molina equalized with a striking long-range goal, but Vinícius responded by curling one past Atleti keeper Juan Musso to secure the win, keeping Madrid just four points behind Barcelona in the La Liga title race.

“It was another fantastic game for Vini, showcasing his talent, courage, and character,” Arbeloa commented during the post-match press conference. “He scored a wonderful goal at a critical moment. I feel fortunate to have him on the team. Is he in the best form of his career? I can’t say for sure, but he’s certainly very close.”

The Brazil international received a standing ovation from the Bernabéu crowd when he was substituted in the 87th minute, a move that seemed to irritate Atleti coach Diego Simeone.

Vinícius has now scored four goals in his last two matches, having also netted a brace against Manchester City in the midweek Champions League clash.

“The success belongs to everyone: the coach, the players, and the fans,” Vinícius shared with Real Madrid TV. “I’m incredibly happy because I’ve been working throughout the season for moments like these. When we reach this stage of the season…

“I don’t know what it is about me, but I always seem to improve. The president [Florentino Perez] always tells me to score two goals, and today I delivered,” he added.

Madrid had to finish the match with 10 players after referee José Luis Munuera sent off Valverde for a challenge on Atlético’s Álex Baena.

“I saw the situation differently than José Luis,” said Arbeloa. “He deemed it excessive force. I didn’t see it that way; such challenges occur frequently, and there was no intent to harm [Baena]. Nevertheless, I appreciate his explanation.”

Atlético now trails their rivals Real by 12 points and sits 16 points behind leaders Barça.

“We could have done more,” Simeone remarked. “At 1-0, we needed to manage the game better.”

Arbelo dodged questions regarding reports of having benched Trent Alexander-Arnold due to late arrival at training, opting instead for Dani Carvajal.

“I always choose the best XI for each match,” Arbeloa explained. “Carvajal performed well, and I’m pleased with his contribution. When Trent came on, he brought great energy. I’m delighted with the variety of options I have available.”
