Kylian Mbappé has dismissed claims that his knee injury was misdiagnosed, following reports that Real Madrid’s medical staff mistakenly examined his healthy right knee instead of the injured left knee.
A journalist from RMC Sport in France, along with several Spanish media outlets, reported on Tuesday that Madrid failed to detect a partial ligament tear in his left knee back in December, examining the wrong knee during a scan.
Mbappé played three matches before the injury was officially diagnosed, with Madrid issuing a medical report on December 31 that identified a knee sprain. An update was provided this month after he sought a second opinion in Paris, leading to over three weeks on the sidelines.
“The claim that [Madrid] examined the wrong knee is false,” Mbappé stated on Wednesday while on international duty with France as they prepare for a friendly match against Brazil. “I may have some indirect responsibility in this situation, as not communicating about my condition leaves room for interpretation, and people rush to fill the gaps.”
“Throughout my recovery, the communication with Real Madrid has been clear, whether I was rehabilitating in Madrid or working in Paris with the club’s medical team, including a doctor, a physiotherapist, and a physical trainer. There’s no issue there.”
“We’re at a crucial point in the season. The team has performed well in my absence, and while many saw me as the sole solution, that wasn’t the case. The focus must remain on the team.”
Mbappé first sustained the injury during a match against Celta Vigo on December 7 but continued to play three matches before the injury was confirmed, including games against Alavés, Talavera, and Sevilla.
After limited minutes in the Supercopa de España, he participated in several matches in January and February. Madrid later confirmed that a consultation with French doctors validated their decision for “conservative treatment” as the correct course of action.
Following a period of rest, he returned as a substitute in last week’s Champions League second leg versus Manchester City, as well as in the recent derby against Atlético Madrid.
“I’ve never been someone who lives with regrets, neither as a person nor a player,” Mbappé remarked on Wednesday. “I concentrate on the present and the near future. Right now, I feel great, especially with both knees, which is crucial. That’s partly due to my club’s excellent management of my fitness.”
“I’m excited to be here, ready and fully fit. I’m prepared to start against Brazil if needed.”
Earlier this week, Mbappé mentioned to Spanish outlet AS that “false information” has circulated regarding his knee injury, which impacted his recent participation with Real Madrid.
