MADRID — Barcelona midfielder Patri Guijarro described their 6-2 victory in the Women’s Champions League against Real Madrid as a “historic result” on Wednesday. Despite holding a four-goal advantage, she emphasized that the team will give “200%” in the second leg.
Ewa Pajor netted two goals at the Alfredo di Stéfano stadium, scoring the opener just six minutes into the match. Meanwhile, goals from Esmee Brugts, Irene Paredes, Vicky López, and Alexia Putellas secured the win for the visitors, with Linda Caicedo scoring twice for Madrid.
This victory positions Barcelona on the brink of a record-extending eighth consecutive semifinal appearance and improves their record against Madrid to 22 wins out of 23 encounters.
This match marked the first of three clashes between the teams in just over a week, with a Liga F Clásico scheduled for Sunday, followed by the return leg in Barcelona next Thursday.
“It was a truly complete performance, worthy of the Champions League,” Guijarro remarked. “While it was a historic result, we are especially pleased with our style of play.”
“This is just the first leg. We’ll bring the same intensity for the second leg. We truly deserved this win. It might seem like we could relax with a four-goal cushion, but quite the opposite. You know how we play.”
Barcelona finished as the UWCL runners-up in 2025 and are former champions from 2021, 2023, and 2024. Real Madrid, whose women’s team was established in 2020, marks the quarterfinal stage for the second consecutive season.
“We faced challenges today,” noted goalkeeper Misa Rodríguez. “We need to reflect on our mistakes because conceding six goals indicates that we need to improve before moving forward.”
Madrid coach Pau Quesada praised Caicedo, who scored two goals and recently extended her contract until 2030, as “one of the best players in the world.” He added, “She supports us, and we need to support her in return. We aim to build a Real Madrid filled with players who can make a significant impact.”
