Republic of Ireland striker Sammie Szmodics has been discharged from a Prague hospital after being knocked unconscious in a World Cup play-off match against Czechia on Thursday night.

The 24-year-old Ipswich striker, who is currently on loan at Derby County, suffered the injury in a collision with defender Stepán Chaloupek just two minutes after coming on as a substitute in extra time at the Fortuna Arena, prompting medical personnel to rush to his aid.

Szmodics was stretchered off the field and taken directly to the hospital, where Ireland head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson later confirmed that he would remain overnight for observation.

A spokesperson for the Football Association of Ireland stated on Friday morning: “Sammie Szmodics was taken to the hospital yesterday after sustaining a head injury during extra time of the playoff match against Czechia. Following a series of tests and a period of observation, he has been safely discharged and will continue his recovery under the supervision of the Republic of Ireland and Derby County medical staff.”

Szmodics, who Hallgrimsson confirmed was set to take a penalty in the shootout that Ireland ultimately lost 4-3, took to social media to thank those who came to his aid.
