Tuchel Questions Maguires…

England manager Thomas Tuchel has seemingly dampened Harry Maguire’s hopes of making the World Cup squad, stating that he is currently positioned as at least the fifth-choice centre back.

Maguire seemed to bolster his chances of traveling to North America for the tournament after an impressive performance in his return to the national team during a 1-1 friendly draw against Uruguay on Friday.

In his first match under Tuchel, Maguire captained the team in the second half, showcasing the commanding style that has marked his England career.

Though the German coach recognized Maguire’s strengths, he mentioned that the Manchester United defender ranks below Ezri Konsa, Marc Guéhi, John Stones, and the injured Trevoh Chalobah in the team’s hierarchy.

“I got exactly what I expected—solid central defensive play,” Tuchel commented. “He’s very good on the ball, composed, and strong in the air, contributing effectively during set pieces.”

However, Tuchel reiterated, “I have not changed my stance; there are other players whose profiles I prefer at this time.” He specified, “I see Ezri Konsa and Marc Guehi in front of him. It’s no secret. Chalobah’s mobility places him slightly ahead as well.”

“John Stones, despite his injuries, required a chance to engage with the team, and he’ll remain with us,” Tuchel added.

Tuchel acknowledged Maguire’s potential contributions in a tournament setting, saying, “He can certainly be an asset, especially in knockout scenarios where defending a lead or generating scoring opportunities via crosses and set pieces is vital.”

When asked if Maguire would make the squad if it had to be announced today, Tuchel responded, “If, if, if. We don’t need to finalize the squad yet. He played well—exactly as he does for Manchester United, and I’m pleased with his performance. If we had to announce the squad now, with many injuries, he might indeed be included. Who else fits in that center back role?”

Stones was unavailable for the clash against Uruguay, having experienced discomfort in his calf during training, continuing his struggles with injuries. The Manchester City defender has only participated in five matches since the November international break and is facing challenges maintaining consistent playing time.

Nonetheless, Tuchel expressed confidence in Stones, stating that he has “credit in the bank,” labeling him as “world class.”

When asked about making exceptions for Stones regarding his lack of game time, Tuchel replied, “I’m not certain yet, but to participate in the World Cup, one must be fit. He was fit upon joining us. While he hasn’t had many minutes lately, his understanding of the game remains significant.”

“Making exceptions implies he hasn’t started many games; I recognize that as a fan of his. I know the qualities he brings to the team, including his personality, attitude, and game intelligence.”
