Romelu Lukaku may face disciplinary measures from Napoli after not returning to training as expected.
The forward withdrew from the Belgium national team for friendly matches against the United States and Mexico in North America, opting to return to Belgium for treatment instead.
This season, Lukaku has only participated in seven matches, all as a substitute, following a significant hamstring injury that sidelined him early in the campaign.
A statement from Napoli released on Tuesday confirmed: “SSC Napoli can confirm that Romelu Lukaku did not respond to today’s call to return to training.”
“The club reserves the right to consider appropriate disciplinary action and to determine the player’s status regarding training with the team for an indefinite period.”
Lukaku addressed his decision to travel to Belgium in a Monday Instagram post.
The 32-year-old, who previously played for Chelsea and Manchester United before joining Napoli in 2024, stated: “The truth is that over the past few weeks I haven’t been feeling physically well, and upon examination in Belgium, it was revealed that I have inflammation and fluid around my hip flexor muscle, adjacent to my scar tissue.”

“Since this is my second issue after returning in early November, I’ve chosen to undergo rehab in Belgium.”
Lukaku emphasized that his future in Italy is secure, stating: “I could never turn my back on Napoli, never. There’s nothing I want more than to play and win for my team.”
“Right now, I need to ensure I’m at 100% physically because I haven’t been lately, which has also affected me mentally.”
Currently, Napoli holds third place in the Serie A standings, trailing leaders Inter Milan by seven points.
