Captain Lionel Messi guided Argentina to a decisive 5-0 triumph against Zambia on Tuesday at La Bombonera, marking an emotional farewell match for fans prior to their title defense at the 2026 World Cup.
Messi made his first start during the March international window in what could be his final appearance for Argentina on home turf.
After coming on as a substitute in the second half against Mauritania the previous Friday, the Inter Miami star assisted Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez just four minutes into the match, giving Argentina an early advantage.
Messi extended the lead right before halftime, marking his 116th goal for the national team and the 902nd of his illustrious career.
During the second half, La Albiceleste was awarded a penalty, which Messi selflessly handed to veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi, allowing him a chance to score in his final home match after announcing his retirement from the national team post-World Cup.
“There is no greater satisfaction than wearing the national team jersey. I am very happy to have had this send-off at home,” Otamendi shared after the match.
“It has been a long journey, filled with joys and some sorrows, as is the nature of football. I leave knowing that I gave my all for the national team, always ready to defend this jersey,” he added.
An own goal by Zambia in the 68th minute, followed by another goal from Valentín Barco, secured the 5-0 victory for Argentina.
“We were excited to play in the Finalissima, but it was important to come together these past few days,” said Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.
Argentina’s previous lackluster performance in a 2-1 win over Mauritania raised some concerns.
Ahead of the friendly against Zambia, coach Lionel Scaloni had warned that he would implement drastic measures if the team’s performance didn’t improve, as the 26-man World Cup squad must be submitted by May 30.
“The key is to ensure we don’t repeat what happened last time. I think today showed it was an accident, and the team worked together well to achieve this win,” Scaloni commented post-match.
