Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof scored crucial stoppage-time goals to help Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich secure a thrilling 3-2 victory over Freiburg.
After falling behind to goals from Freiburg’s Johan Manzambi and Lucas Höler in the second half, Bayern looked poised for only their second league defeat of the season at the Europa-Park Stadium.
However, Bischof netted his first goal for Bayern in the dying moments and then added another equalizer in the second minute of stoppage time with an effort from outside the box, before the teenager Karl completed the comeback with a winner just seven minutes later.
Missing their star striker England captain Harry Kane due to injury, Bayern’s remarkable win came just three days ahead of their Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Real Madrid in Spain.
Bischof initially had a shot saved by goalkeeper Noah Atubolu, and Freiburg missed a clear opportunity to score when Philipp Treu shot wide while unmarked in the penalty area.
Atubolu was forced to make another save from a low volley by Joshua Kimmich, while at the other end, Manuel Neuer, returning from a four-game injury layoff, performed well to deny an attempt from Lucas Höler.
Bayern increased their intensity towards the end of the first half but couldn’t find the breakthrough, with Karl being denied by Atubolu and Serge Gnabry narrowly missing with a long-range shot.
Just after halftime, Freiburg shocked Bayern by taking the lead when Manzambi cut inside and curled a beautiful shot into the net, marking his fourth league goal of the season.
Freiburg had further chances to extend their advantage, with Höler firing over and then missing another opportunity from the edge of the area.
Meanwhile, Bayern’s first chance in the second half fell to Michael Olise, who misdirected Bischof’s cross.
Things worsened for Bayern in the 71st minute when they conceded again, allowing Höler to finish from close range after Neuer failed to handle a corner.
Bayern rallied back to set up a dramatic finish, cutting the deficit with Bischof’s low 20-yard strike in the 81st minute.
As they pressed for an equalizer, attempts from Olise and Kimmich were excellently saved by Atubolu.
In a stunning turn of events, Bischof equalized in stoppage time with a mirrored effort of his first goal, and Karl sealed the comeback by finishing expertly after creative work from Kimmich and Alphonso Davies in the ninth minute of added time.
