Norgaard: Arsenal must…

Christian Norgaard emphasized that Arsenal shouldn’t dwell on their surprising FA Cup exit at the hands of Southampton, as the Premier League leaders look to regroup for the Champions League.

Mikel Arteta’s side faced an unexpected setback on Saturday night at St Mary’s, where the Championship contenders’ tenacity and bravery led to a memorable 2-1 quarterfinal victory.

A late goal from substitute Shea Charles secured Southampton’s place in the semifinals, leaving Arsenal to reflect on their unexpected defeat, which followed their Carabao Cup final loss to Manchester City two weeks prior.

The Gunners will be looking to rebound in Tuesday’s Champions League quarterfinal first leg against Sporting in Lisbon, before hosting Bournemouth in a crucial league match on Saturday.

Norgaard, an experienced midfielder, stated: “The key is to maintain a positive attitude, communicate with teammates and the coaching staff.”

“Now is not the time to hang our heads for too long. It’s okay to feel frustrated tonight and take time to analyze what went wrong tomorrow, but we also need to look ahead since there are significant games coming up for this club.”

Arsenal aims to bounce back from their first consecutive defeats of the season to minimize the impact on what has been a remarkable campaign until now.

“It was a disappointing evening,” Norgaard shared with the club media. “We all had high hopes of returning to Wembley, but that’s no longer the case. I’m sorry to our traveling fans who created an incredible atmosphere; today we simply weren’t good enough.”

The injury-hit Arsenal team only posed a threat sporadically at St Mary’s, where few would argue that the hosts deserved their spot at Wembley.

Ross Stewart calmly put the Saints ahead, and Leo Scienza struck the crossbar shortly before Viktor Gyökeres equalized, but super sub Charles ignited pandemonium with a stunning finish just five minutes before the end.

Goalscorer and lifelong Arsenal supporter Stewart remarked: “It’s pure joy and elation—a remarkable night for the club to defeat a team of Arsenal’s stature as we did. I believe we performed excellently. It was a fantastic night for the club, and the celebrations in the dressing room were great—tonight we will savor. We have important league matters to attend to, and the gaffer has stressed that we need to be ready for another challenging game starting Tuesday.”

Southampton is hoping their FA Cup semifinal will be the first of three trips to Wembley this season.

The aspiration to mirror Lawrie McMenemy’s second-tier FA Cup triumph of 1976 remains alive, as does their promotion dream with Tuesday’s match against playoff rivals Wrexham approaching.

“I think that speaks to the character of our squad,” Stewart conveyed to the club website. “That confidence and belief—we knew it would be a tough match, but we discussed all week how we are a team that’s 14 games unbeaten and not easy to beat, and I think that was evident again.”
