SAN JOSE, Calif. — In a thrilling match on Sunday, Gift Monday made an immediate impact by scoring just two minutes after stepping onto the field as a late substitute, leading the Washington Spirit to a 2-0 victory over Bay FC. This marked the Spirit’s first win of the NWSL season, bringing their record to 1-1-3, along with an own goal that contributed to their success.
Trinity Rodman, still in search of her first goal of the season, had a promising opportunity in the 25th minute, but Bay goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz made a great save on her shot aimed at the near post.
The U.S. star, who signed an NWSL record contract in January to remain with the Spirit despite overseas interest, has started all five games this season, playing a pivotal role in the team’s offensive efforts, even amidst her goal drought.
Silkowitz also denied another attempt from Hal Hershfelt in the 29th minute.
A concerning incident occurred before halftime when Spirit players Lucia Di Guglielmo and Tara Rudd collided on the field. While Rudd continued playing, Di Guglielmo left the game with a bloody head injury but gave fans a thumbs up as she exited.
The Spirit took the lead 1-0 due to an own goal; Silkowitz attempted to clear a ball under pressure from two Spirit players, but her effort unintentionally deflected off Brooklyn Courtnall.
Monday, a Nigerian international, was substituted in during the 84th minute and found the net just two minutes later, scoring on a rebound after Silkowitz had saved Rodman’s shot.
With this defeat, Bay FC’s record dropped to 2-2-0.
