Coach Cuca of Santos has announced that Neymar recently underwent a knee procedure during the international break to ensure he is ready for the upcoming World Cup in June.
The 34-year-old Brazilian forward was not included in Brazil‘s squad for last month’s World Cup warm-up matches against France and Croatia.
Neymar missed Sunday’s 3-1 loss to Flamengo after making an appearance for Santos in their 2-0 victory over Remo on April 2.
“During the break, he had a knee procedure, which limited his training,” Cuca stated regarding Neymar’s situation.
“He spent around four or five days recuperating and then focused on reaching his fitness goals. This week he’s been concentrated on building strength, speed, and endurance. He’ll be fully prepared for the remaining 13 consecutive matches before the next international break. We’ve utilized this time alongside the coaching and medical staff to boost his energy and maintain momentum until mid-year.”
While Cuca did not specify the details of Neymar’s procedure, reports suggest that he underwent platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment, utilizing his own blood to aid tissue regeneration and heal minor injuries.
Since tearing his ACL and meniscus in his left knee while playing for Brazil in October 2023, Neymar has faced various fitness challenges.
He underwent minor surgery on his left knee on December 22.
Although he has returned to the field with Santos in recent months, his performances have not yet convinced national team coach Carlo Ancelotti to include him in the squad for this summer’s World Cup.
As Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals, Neymar has represented his country in three World Cups.
