FA Cup semifinalists Southampton continued their impressive run in the Championship with a decisive 5-1 victory over Wrexham at Stok Cae Ras, pushing the Welsh team out of the playoff positions.
Fresh off a remarkable win against Arsenal, Southampton took command early with goals from Kuryu Matsuki and Flynn Downes, despite having already struck the woodwork twice.
Wrexham managed to pull one back thanks to Josh Windass, but a breakaway goal from Cyle Larin, along with late goals from Ross Stewart and Finn Azaz, sealed the fifth consecutive victory for the visitors across all competitions.
This match marked their 10th win in an unbeaten stretch of 13 league games, solidifying Tonda Eckert’s squad in sixth place and showcasing their excellent timing as the season progresses.
Eckert commented, “The team is incredibly focused right now, and there’s not much more for me to add.”
“My role is to ensure they are well-prepared for the upcoming matches.”
Since Eckert took over from Will Still in November when the team was in 21st place, they have won 10 out of their last 13 league games, with three draws.
Southampton’s intent was clear from the outset, as Larin and Azaz both struck the bar within the first eight minutes. Larin narrowly missed after connecting with Ryan Manning’s cross with a deft header, while Azaz regrettably hit the rebound against the woodwork.
However, Azaz quickly redeemed himself by setting up the opening goal in the 12th minute, threading a perfect pass to Matsuki, who took a touch before slotting it past a wrong-footed Arthur Okonkwo.
The Saints maintained their grip on the match and doubled their lead ten minutes later when Wrexham failed to effectively clear a James Bree free kick, allowing Downes to thump the ball home.
After a long break and their FA Cup success, Eckert was pleased with how his team returned to league play.
He stated, “It feels like we’ve been waiting ages to start Championship football again after the break. We had to ensure we hit the ground running, and I believe the players executed that well.”
“We will be playing Saturday-Tuesday until the season’s end, but I think we have found a good rhythm.”
“We need to focus on finishing games decisively, remain humble, and keep working hard.”
Wrexham struggled to create any notable chances until the 30-minute mark when Nathan Broadhead managed to glance a header against the post from a deflected cross.
This sparked some energy in the crowd, and shortly after, the hosts found a way back into the match.
A long ball from Okonko was flicked on by Kieffer Moore, allowing Windass to exhibit his skill by controlling the ball and deftly flicking it past Jack Stephens to score into the bottom corner.
Larin had a chance to restore Southampton’s two-goal lead but shot over and tested Okonkwo with a volley early in the second half.
After Max Cleworth had a shot deflected just wide for Wrexham, Larin finally got the goal he deserved in the 61st minute, racing clear from halfway and calmly lifting the ball over Okonkwo.
Wrexham fought back, with Moore heading against the post from close quarters, but Azaz struck the woodwork at the other end shortly after.
The Saints reaffirmed their dominance nine minutes from the end when Stewart headed in from a Welington free kick, and Azaz capped off the victory just two minutes later.
This defeat pushed Wrexham down to seventh place in the standings, jeopardizing their chances for a fourth consecutive promotion.
Manager Phil Parkinson remarked, “We have to take this as a lesson, even at this advanced stage of the season.”
“We were aware of the game’s significance before we entered, and it’s painful to know that we didn’t deliver a competitive performance.
“It’s evident that if you lower your standards, you will be punished. We paid a heavy price in that first 20 minutes. We were not at the required level in many areas.
“However, there is still everything to play for. I will analyze this closely and ensure we’re ready for the weekend.”
