Kai Havertz netted a dramatic stoppage-time goal to secure a vital 1-0 win for Arsenal against Sporting in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal in Lisbon.
The match appeared to be heading towards a stalemate when Havertz, who came off the bench, capitalized on a pass from Gabriel Martinelli to deliver a precise finish in the opening minute of stoppage time, giving Arsenal the advantage ahead of the second leg next week at the Emirates.
Arsenal’s goalkeeper David Raya played a crucial role in keeping the match goalless initially, making an impressive early save to deny Maxi Araujo. He later pulled off a remarkable double save towards the end of the game, keeping Arsenal in contention until Havertz’s decisive goal.
Following two consecutive defeats—marking the first time this season they’ve faced back-to-back losses—Mikel Arteta’s squad went into Tuesday’s clash with their hopes of winning multiple trophies diminished from four to two.
However, this win served as a much-needed boost as the Gunners aim to reach the Champions League semifinals for the second consecutive season, a feat they have never achieved before, right before their Premier League home game against Bournemouth on Saturday.
Raya, who had been overlooked by Arteta in Arsenal’s recent cup losses, proved his worth with an exceptional diving save, tipping Araujo’s powerful drive—set up by Ousmane Diomande’s remarkable pass—onto the crossbar just six minutes into the match. This was a world-class effort from a player clearly at the peak of his abilities.
At the other end, Noni Madueke’s corner kick nearly found the net, clipping the inside of the post, while Martin Odegaard narrowly missed with his follow-up shot. Arsenal weathered the early pressure but struggled to seriously challenge Sporting’s Rui Silva.
Sporting’s goalkeeper was only tested once in the first half, comfortably saving a long-range strike from Odegaard three minutes before halftime. Viktor Gyokeres, returning to the club where he scored 97 goals in 102 appearances, managed just nine touches before the interval, prompting Arteta to demand more intensity from his team.
Odegaard’s curling free-kick was saved by Silva, yet Sporting began to grow in confidence. As the hour approached, Francisco Trincao missed a promising opportunity when he shot wide from a favorable position.
Martin Zubimendi had a goal disallowed after 63 minutes for offside, with Gyokeres involved in the build-up. Arteta likely expected this setback to energize his players for a renewed attack, but that surge never materialized.
Raya was back in action shortly after, making an excellent save from Geny Catamo’s close-range header to preserve the tie.
Substitute Martinelli tested Silva with a shot from distance, but the Sporting keeper matched the Brazilian’s effort. Catamo forced Raya into action once more just before the end, followed by a crucial save against Luis Suarez’s follow-up.
Just when it seemed the match would end in a draw, Martinelli found Havertz unmarked in the channel, allowing him to convert the chance and secure a vital victory for Arteta and Arsenal.
