MIAMI — Javier Mascherano has resigned as head coach of Inter Miami CF, just four months after leading the team to its inaugural MLS Cup title.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the club announced that the Argentine manager stepped down for “personal reasons.”

Mascherano officially informed the club of his decision after Saturday’s 2-2 home draw against the New York Red Bulls, as confirmed by a source to ESPN.
The club announced that Guillermo Hoyos will step in as head coach for the first team for “the upcoming matches,” transitioning from his current role as sporting director.
“I want to inform everyone that, for personal reasons, I have made the decision to conclude my time as head coach of Inter Miami CF,” Mascherano stated.
“I would like to express my gratitude to the Club for the trust they placed in me, to every employee of the organization for their collective efforts, and especially to the players, who made it possible for us to create unforgettable memories.”
A former teammate of Miami superstar Lionel Messi during their time with Argentina and Barcelona, Mascherano held the head coach position for almost a year and a half after replacing Gerardo “Tata” Martino in November 2024.
During his tenure, the former Argentina under-20 coach led Inter Miami to the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal, the Leagues Cup final, and made history by winning the MLS Cup in 2025 during his first year with the club.
As of now, Miami stands third in the Eastern Conference after seven games in the 2026 season, but they were eliminated from the Concacaf Champions Cup by Nashville SC.
This decision comes shortly after Inter Miami inaugurated its new stadium near Miami International Airport, where the team has drawn in their first two matches.
“Javier will always be a part of our Club’s history and will hold a special place in the Inter Miami CF family,” said club owner Jorge Mas. “His significant contributions, including the MLS Cup victory and the team’s historic performance at the Club World Cup, are unforgettable. We respect his decision and are profoundly thankful for everything he has brought to the club. We wish him the best in both his professional and personal endeavors.”
Hoyos steps into his new role following a career coaching in various leagues, including Liga MX, and having served as head coach of the Bolivia national team. Chief soccer officer Alberto Marrero will take over Hoyos’ previous duties as the club’s sporting director.
