Barcelona legend Lionel Messi has officially acquired the Spanish fifth-division club Cornellà, as announced by the team on Thursday.
Known for its strong player development and academy, the Catalonia-based club has produced notable talents such as Jordi Alba, Gerard Martín, and Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya.
The club stated in a news release, “The arrival of Leo Messi signifies the beginning of a new era for the club, focused on fostering both sporting and institutional advancement, bolstering its foundation, and continually investing in talent.”
“The project is driven by a long-term vision and a strategic plan that balances ambition, sustainability, and a strong connection to its local community.”
Alba, who spent two years in the Cornellà academy, went on to sign with Barcelona in 2012. Similarly, Ilie Sánchez progressed through the academy before joining Barcelona’s B team and later making his mark in MLS with various teams, including his current club Austin FC.
This acquisition marks Messi’s first foray into owning a European club, though he has previous experience in club ownership with the Uruguayan team Deportivo LSM, alongside his former Barcelona teammate Luis Suárez, and his involvement with Inter Miami CF.
Messi’s investment in Cornellà continues his commitment to youth football, following his hosting of eight under-16 teams during the first Messi Cup at Chase Stadium in December 2025.
