BERLIN — Marie-Louise Eta has etched her name in history as the first woman to coach in the Bundesliga. However, her team, Union Berlin, faced a disappointing 2-1 defeat against Wolfsburg on Saturday.
With four matches left in the season, Eta’s primary objective is to keep Union in the top flight before transitioning to lead the women’s team next season.
Patrick Wimmer and Dženan Pejčinović scored for Wolfsburg early in each half, ending their 12-match winless streak and reigniting their chances of avoiding relegation. Wolfsburg now finds itself just two points shy of St. Pauli in the relegation playoff zone with four fixtures remaining.
Union struggled with efficiency, creating more chances than their opponents but failing to convert effectively. Oliver Burke’s late goal in the 85th minute wasn’t enough to change the outcome for the Köpenick side.
Having won only two matches in 2026, Union recently parted ways with Steffan Baumgart following their loss to Heidenheim, now sitting just six points above the relegation zone.
In 2023, Eta became the first female assistant coach in the men’s Bundesliga, also at Union, and has been overseeing the club’s under-19 men’s team.
Bayern on the Brink of Title
Andrej Kramarić scored two penalties leading Hoffenheim to a 2-1 victory over second-placed Borussia Dortmund, which now paves the way for Bayern Munich to clinch the title at home against Stuttgart on Sunday.
Bayern, with five fixtures remaining compared to Dortmund’s four, holds a 12-point lead and requires just one more point to secure their position at the top.
Werder Bremen bolstered their survival chances with a 3-1 win over Hamburger SV in their northern derby, moving to 31 points, five points clear of St. Pauli.
Mid-table Augsburg triumphed over Bayer Leverkusen with a 2-1 victory, hindering the hosts’ aspirations for Champions League qualification.
