LONDON — After Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat against Manchester United on Saturday, manager Liam Rosenior expressed that the team now faces “a mountain to climb” in their bid to qualify for the Champions League.

Matheus Cunha netted the only goal for United with their sole shot on target at Stamford Bridge, marking Chelsea’s fourth consecutive Premier League loss, during which they have yet to score—a first since March 1998.

This defeat has left Chelsea in sixth place, four points behind fifth-placed Liverpool, who have a match in hand.

“It presents us with a mountain to climb,” Rosenior remarked. “While it isn’t impossible, we need to approach our game against Brighton on Tuesday with the mindset that we must win to rejuvenate our season.”

In contrast, Michael Carrick and Manchester United solidified their position in the Champions League spots with only five matches remaining. Carrick’s achievement was particularly notable given that he had to assemble a makeshift center-back pairing of Ayden Heaven and Noussair Mazraoui due to injuries and suspensions.

“This win was vital for us tonight,” Carrick stated. “We faced several challenges with suspensions and injuries, and adapting after Leny [Yoro] had to withdraw late was crucial. The team deserves immense credit for their efforts, as do the coaches for their strategies and preparation over the past few days. There’s plenty to feel proud of tonight.”
