Coventry City clinched the Championship title with an impressive 5-1 victory over Portsmouth at home on Tuesday.

Under the leadership of Frank Lampard, the team secured their promotion to the Premier League on Friday, and they will now ascend as champions of England’s second division.

American striker Haji Wright, who leads the club in scoring this season, opened the scoring at the CBS Arena with his 17th league goal in the 12th minute.

Ephron Mason-Clark scored twice in the second half, sandwiching an own goal from Portsmouth’s Regan Poole, ensuring the team not only secured the win but also the championship before Kaine Kesler Hayden added a fifth in stoppage time.

Adrian Segecic managed to grab a consolation goal for Portsmouth, who finished the match in 19th place.

“It was an incredible night,” Lampard remarked during the post-match press conference. “We faced some pressure on Friday night, which added to the excitement.”

“What we achieved tonight is what I truly wanted. We’ve dominated the table for a significant time and pushed strongly in the second half of the season. It demonstrates the strength and unity of our group.”

This victory brought Coventry’s total points for the season to 89, giving them an insurmountable lead with two matches left to play.

The Sky Blues are set to return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years, having last been relegated at the end of the 2000-01 season.

Despite a decorated playing career and two stints managing Chelsea, Lampard ranked this season’s accomplishments among his top achievements.

“This is right at the pinnacle of my career,” he stated. “I mentioned it after the Blackburn match, and to seal the title in the way we did, given how the team performed from the outset and ramped up their play in the second half, is remarkable.”

“This year, we’ve seen consistent performances at the CBS [Arena]. The last few weeks presented challenges due to the pressure, which is something we weren’t accustomed to, but we’ve managed to secure the results necessary for our promotion.”

“To clinch it with two matches to spare is extraordinary, particularly in a league that gets tougher every season. Every team poses different challenges, and our players have put together an astounding tally of 27 wins.”
