The MLS has announced the suspension of midfielder Yannick Bright for an additional match due to a violation of the league’s Non-Discrimination Policy during the match between the Colorado Rapids and Inter Miami CF on April 18.
Bright initially received a red card for utilizing discriminatory language, which resulted in his suspension from the match against Real Salt Lake scheduled for Wednesday at America First Field. As a result of the additional suspension, he will also miss the upcoming match against the New England Revolution on Saturday at NU Stadium, completing his two-game ban.
In addition to the suspension, Bright is required to complete a restorative practice program as mandated by the league.
MLS stated in a press release, “When making decisions under this Policy, many factors are taken into account, such as the player’s immediate acknowledgment of the harm caused by their actions, willingness to engage in reparative processes, and cooperation with the league’s investigation.”
Bright’s red card was issued in the 87th minute of the match for the use of offensive and abusive language at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver.
PRO confirmed to ESPN that he was sent off for “offensive, insulting, and abusive language” directed at the referee.
Inter Miami’s interim head coach, Guillermo Hoyos, expressed surprise at the red card, stating in the post-match conference, “Honestly, I don’t know, and I was certainly surprised by the sending-off.”
Despite playing with ten men during the closing moments of the game, Inter Miami secured a 3-2 victory, with the winning goal scored from a free kick by Lionel Messi.
