Luka Modric has concluded his club season with AC Milan due to a cheekbone fracture, but the Croatia captain is expected to recover in time for the upcoming World Cup.
Modric sustained the injury during a late challenge for a header in Sunday’s 0-0 draw against Juventus, colliding with midfielder Manuel Locatelli.
Medical examinations on Monday confirmed a fracture in his left cheekbone, prompting Modric to undergo surgery shortly thereafter.
AC Milan described it as a “complex, multi-fragment fracture of the left zygomatic bone,” but they reported that the surgery “was completely successful.”
While the club did not disclose the exact timeline for his recovery, there are only four matches left in the Serie A season.
“The club wishes Luka a speedy recovery ahead of the FIFA World Cup!” Milan expressed.
Croatia will begin their World Cup journey against England on June 17, with additional group stage matches against Panama and Ghana in Group L.
“I’ve been in touch with Luka,” stated Croatia coach Zlatko Dalić via X, “and I wished him a successful surgery and a swift recovery. I have faith that he will do everything possible to be ready for the FIFA World Cup, and we stand by him in full support. I am confident that his recovery will proceed smoothly, allowing him to lead our team as captain in this important tournament this summer.”
Modric is entering the final months of his contract with Milan, having signed a one-year agreement last summer after 13 successful seasons at Real Madrid. He has the option to extend his contract for an additional year.
A lifelong supporter of AC Milan, Modric has been an integral part of the team’s success. The 40-year-old has started 32 of 34 league matches this season and has been on the bench just once.
He was awarded player of the match in Sunday’s game against Juventus.
