MLS team LAFC announced on Tuesday its intention to sell the struggling Swiss club Grasshopper following fan protests during a home game in Zurich.
The historically successful club, which has won the Swiss championship 27 times, has languished in 11th place in the 12-team league since LAFC acquired a majority stake in January 2024. The ownership group for LAFC includes prominent figures such as Peter Guber, Mark Shapiro, Will Ferrell, Magic Johnson, Mia Hamm, and Nomar Garciaparra.
Following a loss in the Swiss Cup semifinals to second-tier team Stade Lausanne Ouchy, Grasshopper fans erupted in anger earlier this month, displaying a banner during a league match demanding the American owners exit the club.
“We acknowledge the calls for our departure from the club,” LAFC stated in a joint English and German announcement on the Grasshopper website.
“We wish to make it clear that we are open to discussions about a partial or complete sale of the club, as long as it ensures its long-term viability.”
Grasshopper, which had previously been owned by Chinese investors, is one of many European soccer teams now under U.S. ownership. The club has struggled to find a quick resolution to its woes since last winning a league title 23 years ago, and 13 years after its last Swiss Cup victory.
LAFC pointed out that a significant number of European football clubs operate at a loss, stating, “The financial reality is that [Grasshopper’s] operational costs consistently surpass revenue, and the club relies on ongoing external support to remain competitive.”
The club shares the Letzigrund stadium, a historic venue for both football and athletics, with its local rival Zurich.
“We empathize with the frustration and share that sentiment,” LAFC stated on Tuesday, reiterating that they have made significant investments into the club and inviting further dialogue with fan groups.
“Without ongoing investment from ownership, [the club] will struggle to continue as a professional football entity. However, if that is truly what the supporters desire, we are open to discussions on that front as well.”
With four rounds remaining in the season, Grasshopper is poised for yet another 11th-place finish, setting the stage for a relegation playoff against the runner-up from the second division.
