Diego Simeone expressed confidence that Atlético Madrid player Julián Álvarez will be ready for next week’s Champions League semifinal second leg against Arsenal, despite the forward having limped off during the late stages of Wednesday’s 1-1 first leg.
Álvarez stood out during the match at the Metropolitano, equalizing with a penalty after Viktor Gyökeres had initially scored. He was injured following a challenge with Eberechi Eze and was replaced in the 77th minute.
The Argentina international has netted 10 Champions League goals this season, becoming the first Atlético player to achieve double digits in the competition.
“He’ll undergo tests to assess the injury,” Simeone told Movistar. “We hope it’s not serious.
“I remain optimistic.”
Winger Giuliano Simeone was also substituted at halftime after sustaining a knock, while Alexander Sørloth remained an unused substitute after reporting discomfort during warm-ups.
“Knowing my players, I believe they’ll all be ready for the trip to London on Tuesday,” Simeone said during his post-match press conference. “Giuliano has a knock, Julián had his issue, and Alex Sørloth is dealing with a muscle strain. I’m confident they’ll all be there on Tuesday.”
Atlético is now focusing its efforts on the Champions League, trailing behind Barcelona and Real Madrid in LaLiga, and having recently lost the Copa del Rey final to Real Sociedad earlier this month.
“I can’t recall many instances where we’ve experienced an atmosphere like we did at the start of this game,” Simeone remarked. “In the first half, we struggled, but opportunities were limited. We made adjustments in the second half, while [Arsenal] seemed fatigued from their heavy schedule and expectations. They’re leading the Premier League and are under pressure to win the Champions League.
“We couldn’t find the goal that would give us an edge, and we face an extraordinary challenge ahead in London.”
The second leg is scheduled for May 5 at The Emirates in London.
