Manchester United is keen to explore all available options before naming their next permanent head coach, despite caretaker manager Michael Carrick currently being the frontrunner for the position, as reported by ESPN sources.
Carrick has emerged as the favorite to permanently replace Ruben Amorim following a successful run, achieving nine victories out of 13 matches since stepping in as caretaker in January.
While his leadership has brought the team close to Champions League qualification, club officials are committed to conducting a thorough selection process before making a final choice.
ESPN sources have disclosed that several potential candidates have reached out informally to discuss their future plans.
Among them is Bournemouth coach Andoni Iraola, who has declared his intention to leave the Vitality Stadium at the season’s end. Iraola is also on Chelsea‘s radar after the dismissal of Liam Rosenior and meets several criteria for United, including Premier League experience, an attacking philosophy, and compatibility with the club’s management framework.
United has been cautious in limiting formal discussions with managers to minimize distractions as they pursue Champions League football.
Carrick’s squad needs just two points to secure their place in Europe’s elite competition for the following season, with a potential qualification match scheduled against Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Although Carrick’s contract runs until the end of the season, the former England midfielder has been involved in decision-making processes beyond that timeframe, including discussions regarding new contracts for Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo.

One significant factor in the consideration for United regarding Carrick’s potential permanent appointment is the future of assistant Steve Holland and whether he is also open to remaining with the club.
Holland joined Carrick at the club in January and has been a pivotal figure behind the scenes alongside other coaching staff members, including Jonathan Woodgate, Jonny Evans, and Travis Binnion.
