Flick on PSG

Hansi Flick believes that Barcelona is on par with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich after witnessing their intense Champions League match earlier this week.

In the first leg of the semifinal, defending champions PSG triumphed over Bayern 5-4, with Flick watching from home following Barça’s exit to Atlético Madrid in the quarterfinals.

Despite Barcelona’s prolonged 11-year wait to reach a Champions League final, the German manager insists that his squad is among Europe’s finest.

“Absolutely,” Flick affirmed at a press conference when asked if the current Barcelona squad can compete with PSG and Bayern. “One hundred percent, yes.”

Barcelona’s European fortunes hit a low point when they fell to the Europa League in 2022 and 2023.

However, under Flick’s management, they have made significant strides in the Champions League, reaching the semifinals and quarterfinals in his two seasons.

While they have struggled to secure their first European trophy since 2015, their domestic performance has remained strong, as they are poised to win consecutive league titles with Flick at the helm.

A victory against Osasuna this Saturday, combined with Real Madrid‘s potential slip-up against Espanyol on Sunday, could see them crowned champions this weekend.

“It’s not over yet,” Flick cautioned, despite Barcelona holding an 11-point lead over Madrid with just five matches remaining. “I want to emphasize this. We are on the right track, but we need to win more games. Our sole focus is on Osasuna.”

If Barça doesn’t secure the league title this week, their next chance will be on May 10 when they face Madrid, providing the unique opportunity to clinch the title against their arch-rivals in a Clásico match.

“I prefer not to discuss upcoming matches,” Flick said when pressed about the Madrid fixture. “Just focus on Osasuna. That’s it.”

Barcelona will see the return of Raphinha and Marc Bernal for the trip to Pamplona to face Osasuna, although they will be without Lamine Yamal, who is out for the season due to a hamstring injury.

“Raphinha will travel with us,” Flick confirmed. “His presence is vital for the team. He always gives 100%, and his mentality and attitude are invaluable to us. Having him back is important.”

“Bernal will also be available [for Saturday] and could see some action.”
