Wrexham Manager Targets…

WREXHAM, Wales — Wrexham’s manager Phil Parkinson expressed that his players were disheartened after falling short of the Championship playoffs, but he assured fans that the club plans to enhance the squad with new talent over the summer in hopes of another promotion bid to the Premier League next season.

The team finished their Championship season with a 2-2 draw against Middlesbrough at Racecourse Ground, which, combined with Hull City’s results, left Wrexham two points shy of a playoff spot, finishing seventh in the standings. This result ends their remarkable streak of three consecutive promotions.

Parkinson noted that while the team aimed for a top-six finish, he acknowledged that securing seventh place is a significant achievement at this level.

“We’ve introduced numerous new players to the squad, and little by little, we’ve built a strong understanding,” stated Parkinson.

“We’ve developed a fantastic team spirit and came so close to clinching that top six spot.”

He expressed optimism about a stronger squad next year thanks to a unified preseason, along with plans to recruit more quality players for their promotion pursuit.

“As a cohesive group, we will be more formidable. We understand our areas for improvement and are committed to strengthening the squad for next season,” he elaborated.

“There’s so much to look forward to. We’ve made significant strides as a team, and there’s continuous effort to enhance this club for the future.”

However, Wrexham’s captain Dominic Hyam shared that the players were feeling “raw” emotions after the playoff near miss.

“We aimed to keep our hopes alive until the final game, and we achieved that. Yet, the immediate feeling is disappointment. Nonetheless, in a realistic light, we’ve had a strong season in the Championship, and we take pride in the club’s efforts,” Hyam remarked.

“We are an ambitious group, having signed several quality players last summer and in January. In 24 hours, I know we’ll feel pride in what we accomplished. The growth has been significant, but right now, it’s difficult to express that with the predominant feeling being disappointment.”

Hyam continued: “The benchmark has been set. We have quality players, and the manager has been exceptional. The expectation is to build on this next season.”

“Our motivation has always been present. With a bit of luck, combined with hard work and unity, I am confident we can achieve great things next season. The club is committed to bringing in quality players, and I am proud of my teammates. We’ve established a solid standard.”

“While today wasn’t a failure, the prevailing sentiment is one of disappointment. We must draw confidence from this experience. We are a capable team, and the club is on an upward trajectory.”

Middlesbrough will face Southampton in the playoffs. Although they had a slim chance to secure automatic promotion to the Premier League at the start of the day, results did not favor them.

“We had numerous good chances and are disappointed we couldn’t secure a win,” commented Middlesbrough manager Kim Hellberg.

“We were aware it was a long shot to secure automatic promotion, so as we entered the match, we were hopeful. With that option now gone, everyone understood our likely position in the playoffs, so the mood in the changing room is mixed. We wanted the win, but it’s not too disheartening.”
