Kobbie Mainoo marked the occasion of his new contract in style, guiding the homegrown Manchester United to a thrilling 3-2 victory over fierce rivals Liverpool, securing a spot in the Champions League.
The much-anticipated Premier League clash featured third-place United facing fourth-place Liverpool at Old Trafford. The Red Devils exploded into action early, with Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko both finding the net within the first 14 minutes.
However, United allowed Arne Slot’s struggling team to claw back into contention shortly after the break, as Liverpool’s Dominik Szoboszlai took advantage of a careless pass from United substitute Amad in the 47th minute. Just nine minutes later, Cody Gakpo equalized after a mistake from goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
The match continued with fast-paced action until academy graduate Mainoo put United ahead again in the 77th minute, scoring in front of the Stretford End just days after pledging his future to the club until 2031.
This win not only completed a league double over Liverpool for the first time since the 2015-16 season but also secured Champions League qualification with three games remaining, furthering interim boss Michael Carrick’s case for a permanent role.

Unfortunately, Sir Alex Ferguson was unable to witness the match, feeling unwell before kickoff and having to be taken to the hospital.
The home crowd chanted his name as United launched into a blistering first half.
Cunha, returning from a hip injury, had his initial shot blocked in the sixth minute after a corner, but he quickly got another opportunity, sending the ball into the ground and off Alexis Mac Allister, igniting celebrations.
United maintained their momentum, with goalkeeper Freddie Woodman just managing to touch a shot from Sesko in the 14th minute, but Liverpool’s third-choice keeper could not hold off the striker for long.
As the play continued, Luke Shaw delivered a cross that Bruno Fernandes headed back across goal, leading Woodman to push the ball towards the onrushing striker.
Sesko gleefully celebrated his goal while the crowd awaited a lengthy VAR check for a possible handball by the striker, which was ultimately ruled out.
Liverpool attempted to respond with some assertive play, with Ibrahima Konaté pushing Sesko into the advertising hoardings and Gakpo narrowly missing with a shot. Yet, Liverpool appeared disjointed throughout.
Fernandes came close as United searched for another goal before halftime, but Sesko would not resume after the break due to an injury.
Amad replaced him but quickly found trouble, as his careless pass was intercepted by Szoboszlai just inside his own half. The Liverpool midfielder surged at Harry Maguire before scoring with a low left-footed shot.
Maguire came close with a header, while Bryan Mbeumo had a close call following a great flick from Fernandes’ pass that struck the post, though he was ruled offside.
While Liverpool struggled, they managed to find an equalizer in the 56th minute.
Mac Allister intercepted a poor pass from Lammens, sending Szoboszlai through, who quickly assisted Gakpo for a well-placed finish.
Play shifted back and forth as fans exchanged chants, some more vulgar than others, with Lammens clearing off the line moments before Casemiro wasting a free header straight at Woodman.
The defining moment came in the 77th minute, right in front of an ecstatic Stretford End. Liverpool failed to clear a cross effectively, allowing Mainoo to pounce on the loose ball at the edge of the box. He sidestepped Szoboszlai’s sliding challenge and fired it into the bottom-left corner.
Substitute Rio Ngumoha added energy to the attack but saw a shot go narrowly wide. Lammens then fended off a deflected cross to help United secure the win.
