Suárez: Being Benched by…

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Forward Inter Miami, Luis Suárez, shared his thoughts on being benched by former head coach Javier Mascherano. He admitted to questioning the decision, but noted that the experience ultimately helped him remain composed.

“Mascherano explained his reasoning to me, and I accepted it without issue,” Suárez told reporters on Wednesday.

“Naturally, when you find yourself getting less playing time, you can’t help but wonder why, especially since I felt my performances hadn’t been poor. However, these are decisions you have to accept.”

“My focus has been on working hard every day, striving to earn more playing time.”

Mascherano’s decision to bench Suárez took effect during the 2025 MLS playoffs, following a one-game suspension in the first round against Nashville SC. Suárez began the 2026 season as a substitute but reclaimed his spot in the starting lineup under new interim manager Guillermo Hoyos.

This season, Suárez has tallied two goals and two assists in seven MLS matches.

“Like any player’s career, mine has its ups and downs. There are moments of confidence and times when you feel off. The suspension, followed by not playing, allowed me to find a sense of calm; I chose not to speak out.”

“Once I got back on the field, I began to feel like myself again, which is always what you aim for – happiness, involvement, and a sense of regained confidence. But every player experiences these ebbs and flows, and I’ve had my share throughout my career.”

Suárez opted to remain with Inter Miami for the 2026 season, signing a new one-year contract in December.

“The decision to continue came from the recognition that I still have something to give and the desire to keep competing remains strong,” Suárez explained. “You can see it in my reactions on the pitch – I still feel frustrated by losses and thrill at scoring goals.”

“I still have the adrenaline and passion to continue playing.”

The forward also addressed speculation about feelings of jealousy towards Germán Berterame, denying any competitiveness with the newly signed Mexico forward.

“New players come in to enhance the team, and it’s important to support and encourage them. A lot has been said, but Berterame is a player with incredible potential.”

“I’ve always aimed to help him grow, and we have a great relationship. No matter how many new strikers join, I’ll continue to be supportive given my experience in the game; my goal is to assist anyone new that comes on board.”

Hoyos has chosen to field both Berterame and Suárez together as they develop their partnership on the field.

Inter Miami will return to action on Saturday against Toronto FC at BMO Field in Toronto.
