Luis Enrique and Paris Saint-Germain are heading to the Champions League final after securing a 1-1 draw in the second-leg semifinal against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night.
PSG triumphed in a thrilling first leg in Paris last week, edging out Bayern with a 5-4 victory, and advanced with an aggregate score of 6-5, setting the stage for the final against Arsenal in Budapest on May 30.
“It’s incredible, reaching two finals,” said PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi after the match. “Now we will go and strive for a second star. I told the players that we are warriors.”
Despite being exposed four times in the first leg, PSG’s defense effectively contained Bayern’s powerful attack, which features stars like Harry Kane, Luis Díaz, and Micheal Olise.
“We know how to endure and are ready for what lies ahead,” stated PSG midfielder João Neves. “We’re very proud of our journey so far.”
Ousmane Dembélé scored the opener with a first-time shot, assisted by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia after a quick run down the left flank.
Shortly after the 30-minute mark, Bayern expressed outrage when a handball by Nuno Mendes, already on a yellow card, went unpunished, while another potential handball claim against João Neves in PSG’s penalty area was also waved off. It appeared that VAR was not consulted on either situation, even though replays indicated that the referee had already signaled a handball against Bayern’s Konrad Laimer prior to the suspected Mendes infraction.
Kvaratskhelia’s assist made him the first player to score or assist in seven consecutive Champions League knockout stage matches in a single season, tying with Kylian Mbappé for the most contributions in a single UCL season, totaling 16 (10 goals, six assists).
Despite their efforts, Bayern struggled to claw back into the game during the second half until Kane scored a late consolation goal just before the final whistle. Bayern had a strong record against PSG at home, winning five of the last seven encounters, hoping to repeat their historic treble wins in 2020 and 2013.
Ultimately, their campaign came up just short, with PSG looking the more dangerous side as they created more opportunities in the second half.
After the halftime break, Manuel Neuer made back-to-back saves against Désiré Doué and Kvaratskhelia. Doué then tested Neuer again with a low shot that resulted in another impressive save from the Bayern keeper.
Bayern came close to scoring again through Díaz, who was thwarted by Matvei Safonov, but PSG maintained the greater attacking threat. Doué missed narrowly with a shot that went just wide of the post, nearly giving PSG a vital second goal.
Kvaratskhelia also had a golden opportunity to extend PSG’s lead but misfired in front of goal.
England captain Kane eventually found space within the box to deliver a powerful shot into the roof of the net in stoppage time, but it proved too little too late.
PSG and Bayern entered the second leg as the highest-scoring teams in the competition, with 43 and 42 goals respectively. This marks the first time in Champions League history that two teams have scored over 40 goals in the same season, a feat made possible by the expanded League Phase format.
Arsenal secured their place in the final on Tuesday after a 1-0 victory against Atlético Madrid, advancing 2-1 on aggregate.
PSG will aim to become only the second team in history to win back-to-back Champions League titles, a feat previously achieved by Real Madrid, who won three consecutive titles from 2016 to 2018.
