During Saturday’s Serie A match, Udinese forward Keinan Davis accused Cagliari defender Alberto Dossena of racially abusing him by calling him a “monkey.”
Dossena has denied the allegations.
As the match neared its conclusion, which Udinese won 2-0, Davis, who is Black, reacted strongly after hearing comments from the stands and brought it to the referee’s attention.
Tensions escalated post-match when teammates had to separate Davis and Dossena.
Following the game, Davis shared a story on Instagram, tagging Dossena and posting his image with the message:
“This racist coward called me a monkey today during the game. I hope the Serie A association will address this, but we will see.”
Approximately an hour later, Dossena responded on Instagram.
“Being called a racist is distressing and painful for me,” Dossena stated. “It is a grave accusation, and I would never think to insult a colleague in such a way.
“This is the first time I find myself defending against such a defamatory claim. Such behavior is entirely contrary to my upbringing and values.”
Udinese also released a statement supporting Davis, without mentioning Dossena by name.
“Udinese Calcio expresses its full solidarity and support for Keinan Davis, who faced disgraceful racist insults from an opposing player during the match,” the statement read.
“The club strongly condemns these deplorable actions that tarnish the image and values of the sport. Udinese will stand by Keinan and anticipates a swift resolution from the relevant sports authorities.”
Teammates and Cagliari coach Fabio Pisacane defended Dossena, asserting they believe he did not make any racist comments.
“I have known Alberto Dossena for years, and I trust his character and values,” Pisacane said. “It doesn’t even occur to me that he could have said something like that. I trust my player and regret the fallout from the match.”
Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile supported Dossena as well, stating, “We talked to Alberto, and he assured us he didn’t say anything racist. He is a family man with strong values.”
However, Udinese’s Nicolò Zaniolo alleged that Dossena not only insulted Davis but also made remarks about his family.
“The individual who dared to insult my children and my teammate for the color of his skin should be ashamed and never step on a football field again,” Zaniolo expressed in an Instagram story.
