Berhalter Downplays…

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Vancouver Whitecaps and United States midfielder Sebastian Berhalter stated that the impending announcement of the Americans’ World Cup roster in two weeks does not create added stress for him.

At 25 years old, Berhalter netted the equalizer in a 1-1 draw against the Western Conference-leading San Jose Earthquakes on Saturday evening. His goal was particularly timely with U.S. manager Mauricio Pochettino set to reveal his World Cup roster on May 26.

Despite the anticipation, Berhalter remarked that he does not feel overwhelmed by the need to perform. “I feel so grateful. Just a year ago, I hadn’t even made my national team debut, and to be in this position now is incredible,” he shared with ESPN following the match. “For me, it doesn’t feel like pressure. It’s not something I view as a must-do.”

“It’s an honor,” he continued. “Having the chance to represent my country at a home World Cup would mean the world, and I’m thrilled by the opportunity.”

Although Berhalter was pleased to contribute to the team’s result, he believes the goal won’t dramatically sway Pochettino’s final decision. He pointed out that his consistent performance—11 matches for the USMNT in the past year—will be more pivotal in securing his spot on the roster.

“I think the coaching staff has already formed their impressions,” Berhalter suggested. “They know what to expect from me. My goal now is just to keep delivering my best and proving that I deserve to be there, one goal at a time.”

Earlier this week, Berhalter received a potential boost when he learned that Atlético Madrid midfieler Johnny Cardoso had suffered a sprained ankle, with his availability for the World Cup in question. Berhalter expressed hope that Cardoso will recover quickly.

Berhalter is also competing for a roster spot against players like Cristian Roldan of the Seattle Sounders and Aidan Morris from Middlesbrough.

“Johnny is a great player and a genuinely nice guy, so I hope he can recover and be part of the national team. He absolutely deserves to be there,” Berhalter said, showing his support for Cardoso.

With three road games left for Vancouver before the World Cup selection, Berhalter will be aiming for strong performances. The Whitecaps are scheduled to face FC Dallas on May 13, Houston Dynamo FC on May 16, and FC San Diego on May 23.

“My focus is on winning games with the team,” Berhalter stated. “It’s easy to stay concentrated when you’re surrounded by teammates you want to succeed for. We’re just aiming for three points every match, whether it’s on Saturday or Wednesday.”
