Arne Slot has admitted that Liverpool’s 4-2 loss to Aston Villa could be “damaging” for their ambitions to secure UEFA Champions League qualification. He acknowledged the fans’ frustrations following a disappointing season.
The Reds faced their 19th defeat of the season in all competitions at Villa Park, which allowed Unai Emery’s team to move into the fourth place ahead of them.
Though Champions League qualification is still within Liverpool’s reach, Bournemouth and Brighton & Hove Albion could potentially finish above Liverpool if they don’t secure a victory against Brentford in their upcoming match at Anfield next weekend.

“It’s damaging because we needed at least a win or possibly two draws to stay in contention,” Slot explained. “Now, we know for sure that we must win next week if we want to control our fate.
“Other teams also have to earn points for us to need a win. It’s particularly damaging that we couldn’t achieve a favorable result today.
“There were moments in the game where I felt we could have come away with a result; however, the phase following the 2-1 scoreline was where we lost our momentum, leading to two additional goals against us. This was the toughest stretch of the match.
“As a manager, it’s frustrating when recurring issues arise — you are hired to prevent such situations.”
This loss marked Liverpool’s first league defeat to Aston Villa since October 2020 and made it their 12th defeat in the Premier League this season. Only three times has a defending Premier League champion lost more matches the season following their title win.
This match also saw Liverpool concede four goals in a Premier League game for the first time during Slot’s tenure. Their total goals conceded this season reached 51, the highest in a 38-game Premier League season.
Despite these challenges, Slot expressed confidence on Thursday that he had “every reason to believe” he will remain in charge next season.
“I understand that fans may lack confidence right now and feel uncertain about next season, but I believe they underestimate the impact a transfer window can have and what a fresh start can bring,” Slot stated after the loss on Friday.
“We are aware of the areas that need improvement, and it is evident that we must address certain issues. I wish I didn’t have to discuss this right now, but the situation requires it.
“When you are missing nine players who can start — most of whom have been key starters for us — and coupled with how players adapt in the Premier League, the situation demands attention to detail for improvement.
“I believe that, even today, for large portions of the game, we were near achieving a result. However, when you are the superior team, you need to capitalize on chances and limit the number of set pieces conceded throughout the season.
“I don’t think the discrepancies are vast; focusing on doing the right thing in crucial moments can lead to significant improvements.”
